After thirty years, Aziz’s marriage now consists mostly of arguing about whether to sell their store to a developer. His wife has a social life, interests and plans for the future, but the pawnshop is Aziz’s connection to his community. And then one day a desperate fox rushes into the shop looking for the honeymoon tape his husband sold. Seizing on this chance to make a difference, the cheetah steps up to help save their crumbling marriage. A gay couple might not show him the way to a new life, but he’s running out of ways to save his old one. The Time He Desires by Kyell Gold, with illustrations by Kamui.

The Time He Desires Kyell Gold 9781614503361 Books

Like most of Kyell's "Cupcake" novellas, "The Time he Desires" is a short but sufficient treat that has a little more meat in it than most of his other short stories.
The topics and ideas presented here are complicated and deep, dealing with issues of change versus tradition in not only faith, but relationships, home, and sexuality. What do we hold on to, what do we let go? What is worth keeping, and is it okay to explore other roads and possibilities?
Being a novella, some might be disappointed that these topics aren't explored further than what is presented, but Kyell manages to say a lot in the short span of pages he has to work with. In the end, even if the answers to all the questions raised aren't given, you at least get a sense of where they might head.
That being said, there are some characters and plot points that I wished we did get closure on. Alas, perhaps we might see them again in the future? Kyell does have a skill at including characters and places from previously established books into the story in a way that doesn't leave the reader wondering if they're missing something, but rewards longtime readers for noticing. Apparently there are characters featured here that appear in another story of his, "Love Match", which I haven't read yet but now am excited to knowing that.
As with his other works and indeed most "furry" literature in general, it might be hard to recommend to people if the fact that the characters are all talking animals distracts them too much, but if they're open enough to the idea I think this novella is worth showing to people and might even be a great gateway for them to enjoy other "furry" stories.

The Time He Desires Kyell Gold 9781614503361 Books Reviews

I should start this review by saying that I've been a fan of Kyell Gold's work ever since I became interested in stories with anthropomorphic animals, but this by far is not a book to be missed, by both his fans and those who have never read an animal character book.

The story begins with a look into the life of the main character, Aziz, a devout Muslim who owns a pawn shop (something that actually goes against his religion) and is debating about selling the store as well as his own crumbling marriage. When a man (fox) comes into the store with a video camera, it's nothing out of the ordinary until Aziz learns that the video camera contains a tape that belongs to the fox and his husband, and becomes determined to try to fix their marriage and deal with issues that he's buried in his life.

Not only is the prose tight and all the characters, even the most minor ones, have wonderful characterization, Aziz's religion is beautifully portrayed and it is clear the author did his research on the Islamic faith. Dealing with issues of marriage, gay rights, and where to find hope in a rapidly changing world, perhaps the most touching part of this story is how faith can and does co-exist in a world that seems to turn its back on such ideals. Each character grapples with doubts, and the issues that they touch upon show that there's no one right answer for everyone, but everyone can find their inner peace.

This is simply a lovely novella that I still think about long after I turned the final page. Aziz's struggle with his family and with society are poignant and realistic, and the ending has just enough sweetness to give hope. It's a wonderful book from a very talented author, and should to be missed.
In this novella with an anthropomorphic animal cast, Aziz Alhazhari (cheetah) is a 45-year-old Middle Eastern Muslim who immigrated with his wife and infant to an analogue of Brooklyn two decades ago, bought a pawnshop, and became a good member of the community. He joined the local mosque and goes to prayers every evening. Now he is having a midlife crisis. The community is breaking up; his friends are retiring or selling out to a big developer and leaving. Aziz wants to stay; his wife wants to sell and leave. Their son has grown up to become a homosexual; anathema to orthodox Muslims, but Aziz is aware that Muslims here do not follow the attitudes in the Middle East, and anyway attitudes here towards homosexuality are changing. Aziz’s reaction towards these changes affect his decision whether to hold on to his life in “Brooklyn”, or to accept evolving into a new life.

Gold’s high-quality novella (it is being mentioned for literary awards) explores American Islam’s attitudes toward homosexuality with a cheetah protagonist, a Siberian tigress baker neighbor, a squirrel bookseller best friend, and others including a gay fox married to a male cougar. The ending is slightly frustrating; the reader wants to know the results of Aziz’s decision. But Gold wants the reader to concentrate on the social forces affecting Aziz, not on a comfortable resolution. “The Time He Desires” is designed to make the reader think – there’s time for a sequel later.
This novella was a unique read, and the amount of detail put into the setting was fantastic. I loved every bit of it.
Good story if you aren't offended by the subject matter.
