Poetry. "It really is gorgeous writing.... So much of it is just wonderfully lyrical and funny and moving. What a crazy/delicious world McIntosh invents."—Lanford Wilson
Cemetery Chess Selected and New Poems Sandy McIntosh Books
Sandy McIntosh's Cemetery Chess is a treasure trove that reveals the wide range of McIntosh's poetic talent and imagination during a writing career that has now spanned over forty years. The majority of the poems in this collection are from McIntosh's previous books, beginning in 1970 with selections from Earth Works, then moving on to poems from Which Way to the Egress? (1972), Monsters of the Antipodes (1978), Endless Staircase (1991), Between Earth and Sky (2002), The After-Death History of My Mother (2005), Forty-Nine Guaranteed Ways to Escape Death (2007), Ernesta, In the Style of the Flamenco (2010), and ending with nine new poems. Unlike many poets, McIntosh constantly explores new ideas and new poetic forms, which means that his work brims with the freshness of exploration, personal and intellectual. There are novel-like poems here (Ernesta), poems in the form of charts (Partial Menu of Dishes Returned to the Kitchen by a Former Girlfriend), poems in the form of lists (Forty-Nine Guaranteed Ways to Escape Death), funny poems (Escape From The Fat Farm), haunting poems (On The Shinnecock Canal), poems that are both lyrical and deeply tragic (Endless Staircase 3). It's clear that when McIntosh decided to write poetry back in 1970, he made an excellent choice not only for himself but for his readers. "So you found the right thing?" he asks one of the characters in Alarm Clock. "Yes," the character replies. "Yes, I did."Product details
